Career Connections

Career Connections guides are developed to assist you in planning your academic career to prepare you for entry into your chosen career field. Selected Career Connections guides are listed below; visit the Career Center's Career Connections site for a complete list of available resources.

  • Community Organizing and Advocacy
"The field of Community Organizing focuses on mobilizing a community for political or economic action." Theories of communication should serve you well in engaging the constituency, politicians, the media, etc.

  • Journalism
No surprise that this would be a good match: "Professional journalists need a wide variety of skills and abilities. They must be strong (and fast) writers who are good at drawing information out of their sometimes reluctant sources. They also must be top-notch researchers able to analyze and interpret complex situations and organize large volumes of information in a logical, clear, and succinct manner."

  • Marketing
Another no-brainer in terms of skills transference! "The four most common marketing roles include marketing combined with public relations or communications, sales & marketing, market research and marketing strategy."

  • Museum Careers
Interpretation is one of the major goals of museums. Communications students will already have a good start on how to develop and present tours and other interpretive materials.
